OUR HISTORY

The history of Mitsui Foods is in many ways the history of the growth and evolution of the global food industry over the last half century.

Back in 1953, when Mitsui Foods was founded, the industry was in its infancy. Product quality was low, prices were high and availability was unreliable. To many, these problems seemed insurmountable. But, at Mitsui, we saw incredible opportunity.

So, we went to work. We nurtured indigenous farmers to boost quality and crop yield. We worked with local packers to improve processing and packaging standards. And, we developed our own innovative system of distribution logistics to ensure reliability of the supply chain. And it worked!

In the ensuing years, quality surged, prices shrank, availability spread and customer demand followed. So did competitors. Many followed Mitsui’s lead. And that, in turn, fed more growth. And so, the industry’s business boomed.

Mitsui continued to lead with innovative new products, improved logistics and enhanced customer service. More growth followed. So did more competitors. Mitsui continued to innovate. And, so it went.

Today, due in no small part to Mitsui, the once tiny global food business is a multi-billion dollar industry and these unique and wonderful foods from around the world have evolved from rare specialty items to become essential staples in the culinary pantry of North America. And, at Mitsui, we’re proud to have helped lead the way.
